Basic Waveforms & Harmonic Content
Every waveform is a recipe of harmonics. The purer the shape, the fewer it contains.
Subtractive Synthesis
The most common method: start with a harmonically rich waveform and use filters to remove frequencies.
Signal path: VCO → VCF → VCA, modulated by envelopes and LFOs.
Additive
Build sounds by combining sine waves at different frequencies and amplitudes.
FM Synthesis
One oscillator modulates another's frequency, creating complex spectra. DX7 iconic sounds.
Wavetable
Morph between stored waveforms for evolving, animated textures.
Granular
Slice audio into tiny grains and reassemble. Creates ethereal soundscapes.
