Eurorack Modular

The modular format, signal types, essential modules, and creative patching.

What is Eurorack?

Eurorack is a modular synthesiser format established by Doepfer in 1996. You build your instrument from individual modules connected via patch cables.

Modules are 3U tall (128.5mm) with width in HP (5.08mm each). They connect via 3.5mm cables and share power from a bus board.

Signal Types

Audio

Typically ±5V. The sounds you hear, oscillating at 20 Hz – 20 kHz.

Control Voltage (CV)

0-10V or ±5V. Controls pitch, filter, etc. 1V/octave standard for pitch.

Gate/Trigger

Binary on/off signals. Gates hold for note length; triggers are brief pulses.

Clock

Regular pulse trains that synchronise sequencers, drums, and time-based modules.
